It rained today. Three quarters of an inch by my rain gauge. Lana, my farming partner and sister-in-law, has a fancy electronic gauge and she had 83 hundredths.
Farming has made me realize just how not in control of things I am. I can plan all I want, consult with the experts, read everything Purdue publishes, spend a fortune on seed and fertilizer, work like a fiend to put it all in the ground, and if God doesn’t send the rain, it doesn’t mean a thing.
It’s terrifying, and liberating.
