We’re off in just 3 weeks for the biennial Gordon family (my in-laws) vacation at Topsail Island, North Carolina. Topsail is a beautiful place, wonderfully underdeveloped with little more than houses along the beach.
It is the perfect place to park yourself on the beach under an umbrella and read. I’m assembling my reading list and will soon be inundating the best library in the country (Allen County Public Library) with my requests.
The list in no particular order.
- Off Main Street. Michael Perry
- White House Burning. Simon Johnson and James Kwak
- 13 Bankers. Also Simon Johnson and James Kwak (A Josh Zumbrun selection)
- The Happiness Project. Gretchen Rubin (Another Josh Zumbrun selection. Seems a little weird to me.)
- The Road. Cormac McCarthy. (Another Josh Zumbrun selection)
- Catching Fire. Suzanne Collins. (A long hold list at ACPL, may not be able to get this one.)
- Arrowhawk. Lola Schaefer. (Yes, I know this is a children’s book. Lola is my cousin and I’ve never read any of her books.)
- Fidelity: Five Stories. Wendell Berry. (And maybe some other Berry books as well.)
- Bad religion: how we became a nation of heretics. Ross Douthat (I’m not too sure about this one.)
- Le Ton beau de Marot. Douglas Hofstadter. (Been reading this for years, maybe I’ll finally finish it.)
- Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession. Julie Powell. (A Missy Gordon selection)
- In the Garden of Beasts. Erik Larson.
- A Walk in the Woods. Bill Bryson
Is that enough for a week? I think so, I may even need to prioritize this list in case I don’t get through them all.
