Baked Beans on a Wood Fire

Our local PBS station has been running Steven Raichlen’s BBQ U continuously for the Fourth of July holiday. Inspired by that I cooked baked beans over a wood fire tonight.

I built a fire in the firepit and let it burn down. Since it’s 90 degrees outside I didn’t need much of a fire.

The beans cooked about an hour over the fire and picked up a nice smoky taste. It was a lot of fussing to build the fire and watch the beans as they cooked. It would’ve been much simpler to just toss them in the oven. But it was fun to do on holiday.

They were quite good. Not soupy and a tad spicey.
