I’ve been watching the NCAA men’s basketball tourney, hoping for a miracle and Purdue goes back in time and beats VCU. Tonight I’m watching Connecticut and Arizona run up and down the floor in a game I’m not the least interested in. Why? Well, having the TV on to drown out the emptiness of my soul is not the purpose of this post.
What is the purpose of this post then?
Watching UConn run up and down the floor I became increasingly disturbed by their uniforms.
What do we have here? On the player’s right we have the ubiquitous Nike swoosh. If you doubt for a minute for whom these athletes are competing, just look at the jersey of every team – they’re playing for Nike.
Then on the left we have the flag of the United States of America and above that what is during the tourney a NCAA blue circle.
Now, I’m no flag waver. I’m very critical of my country and her role in 3 wars in the Middle East and of our inept representatives who cannot see beyond their next re-election. But nonetheless I believe in the dream of America and if you’re going to ignore the flag etiquette and put the flag on a sports uniform, you ought to at least put the flag above the relentlessly and shamelessly commercial symbols of Nike and the NCAA.
