{"id":5660,"date":"2014-12-10T21:39:43","date_gmt":"2014-12-11T02:39:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/?p=5660"},"modified":"2014-12-10T21:50:28","modified_gmt":"2014-12-11T02:50:28","slug":"at-the-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/?p=5660","title":{"rendered":"At The Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was at the library today, renewing my PLAC card <a href=\"#1\">[1].<\/a>  While I was waiting for the librarian to punch through the 40 or 50 screens it takes to do that a man with a couple of young, maybe 10-12 year old, girls came up to the terminal next to me. <\/p>\n<p>I tried not listen, really, but the stations at the library are very close together.  They returned a book they thought was lost.  After doing that the librarian took that book off their record and said they still owed $23 in fines, and said they couldn&#8217;t check books out until they&#8217;d paid it down to $10.<\/p>\n<p>The girls were standing there holding books, and their dad said, &#8220;we can&#8217;t check those out now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then they stepped off to the side and he looked in his wallet, figuring (I&#8217;d guess) whether he could find $13 so his kids could get a couple of library books.<\/p>\n<p>Oh my God, I thought.  I had a wallet full of twenties.  I&#8217;d never miss one.  Could I hand the librarian one and say, &#8220;pay their fine down?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t.  And I&#8217;m deeply ashamed.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><a name=\"1\">1.<\/a> Public Library Access Card.
