I had a hex sign on the side of our shed that I’d painted on a circle of masonite. It blew off in a wind storm this summer and all that was left was a scrap on the shed, and a piece our neighbor found in the adjoining field.<\/p>\n\n\n

Despite their name, there’s no black magic or superstitions attached to hex signs. They’re just decorative. As you can piece together from the scraps above, mine had a scalloped edge, two rings, and a 4-pointed star with raindrops. <\/p>\n

I liked that hex sign, I thought it looked nice and I liked the raindrops on it, representing the importance of rain to the farm. After things slowed down this fall I set about making another one.<\/p>\n

I started with a circle of masonite and gave it several coats of primer\/sealer to provide a nice base.<\/p>\n

Then I sketched the pattern on in pencil.<\/p>\n

I’m nobody’s artist. That pattern is mostly just geometry.<\/p>\n

I just start painting the colors one at a time. First the yellow.<\/p>\n

Then the red.<\/p>\n

Then the green star.<\/p>\n

And finally the blue.<\/p>\n

Each color needs another coat. And then when that’s done I need to go back with white and cover up any drips or places where my shaky hand wandered.<\/p>\n

All that’s left to do now is attach it to the side of the shed.<\/p>\n
