{"id":406,"date":"2010-08-13T17:24:56","date_gmt":"2010-08-13T22:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/?p=406"},"modified":"2010-09-03T08:41:53","modified_gmt":"2010-09-03T13:41:53","slug":"groundbreaking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/?p=406","title":{"rendered":"Groundbreaking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today we broke ground for the long-considered outdoor cooking area.\u00a0 This all started in 2002 when my company was moving to a new building.\u00a0 In the basement of the old building was a cast iron door from an abandoned coal furnace.\u00a0 Since it was just going to be thrown in the dumpster, I brought it home.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t need a reason, Debbie and I both firmly believe you can never have too many heavy chunks of iron lying about.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-423\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSCN0181.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-423\" title=\"DSCN0181\" src=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSCN0181-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Genesis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sure enough, my faith in acquiring chunks of iron was rewarded.\u00a0 In 2003 I saw plans for this adobe bread oven.\u00a0 &#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t it be cool to build an adobe bread oven and use the iron door on it,&#8221; I thought.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_407\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-407\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/adobe-oven-m.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-407  \" title=\"adobe-oven-m\" src=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/adobe-oven-m-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Genesis\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/adobe-oven-m-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/adobe-oven-m.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Initial Concept<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>The passing years have seen the initial concept blossoming by 2010 into a stone fire pit, smoker, bread oven, and work area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_408\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-408\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/smokehouse-stonehenge-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-408 \" title=\"smokehouse-stonehenge-1\" src=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/smokehouse-stonehenge-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"The Current Concept\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Current Concept<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>You&#8217;d think the Federal government was running this show.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re planning on using stone instead of brick as in the picture above.\u00a0 The chimney on our house is stone, and stone figures heavily in our landscaping.\u00a0 Building it from stone will provide a pleasing consistency, and in keeping with the ever expanding nature of the project, it&#8217;s the most expensive choice.<\/p>\n<p>We had a fire pit made out of hand-me-down limestone in the area where we want to put the new structure, surrounded by crushed stone.\u00a0 That all had to come out to make way for the Big Stone Cooking Area.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Our mason is coming tomorrow to start work so despite today being the hottest day in living memory, I hauled off all the old limestone,\u00a0 filled in the old fire pit, shoveled up all the crushed gravel, and removed 2 sections of fence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_410\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-410\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSCN0180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-410 \" title=\"DSCN0180\" src=\"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSCN0180-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shovel Ready<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jay Rosswurm, a local mason, is doing the skilled work for us.\u00a0 Jay&#8217;s a 3rd generation mason (at least 3rd, maybe more, I should ask him).\u00a0 He came over earlier in the week to look at our site and listen to our ideas so he could work up an estimate.\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t know it, but he had the job when he said to me, &#8220;I&#8217;ll have to ask Grandpa about the dimensions for the flue.&#8221;\u00a0 That sort of filial respect, and the willingness to admit you don&#8217;t know everything, carries a lot of weight with me.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m already considering the first change order;
