{"id":2607,"date":"2012-08-26T09:18:42","date_gmt":"2012-08-26T13:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/?p=2607"},"modified":"2012-08-26T09:18:42","modified_gmt":"2012-08-26T13:18:42","slug":"im-keeping-my-hands-on-the-wheel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chuckzumbrun.net\/?p=2607","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m Keeping my Hands on the Wheel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sunday paper today had a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.journalgazette.net\/article\/20120826\/FEAT0108\/308269988\/1135\/FEAT0108\">feature<\/a> that mentioned the Nook e-reader replacing all instances on the letters &#8216;kindle&#8217; in War and Peace with the letters &#8216;nook&#8217;, resulting in such deathless prose as &#8220;It was as if a light had been Nookd in a carved and painted lantern.&#8221;<sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Surely that can&#8217;t be true,&#8221; I thought.  So I turned of course to the Internet to find the truth. Sure enough, NBC News had an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/technology\/gadgetbox\/nookd-bookseller-replaces-kindle-nook-war-peace-e-book-808308\">article<\/a> about it.  According to this article though it was an error made when converting the Kindle version of the book to the Nook version, not a deliberate attempt by Barnes &#038; Noble to strike the word &#8216;kindle&#8217; from common usage.<\/p>\n<p>Just remember, these are the same<sup>[2]<\/sup> people that are bringing us the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_driverless_car\">driverless<\/a> car.  I&#8217;ll be keeping my hands on the wheel, thank you very much.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>[1] They didn&#8217;t even try to maintain the capitalization of the original text!<\/p>\n<p>[2] Not literally the same people of course.  The book was converted by a group called, amusingly, Superior Formatting Publishing and the driverless car I mentioned above is being developed by Google.
