Tales from Skunk Hill

Uninvited

We just got a call from the Fort Wayne Police Athletic League seeking funds. It’s 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday, the day after Christmas.

I might be inclined to donate money to the PAL, but if you show up uninvited at my place on a Sunday night, in person or on the phone, you’re not welcome and believe me, you’re going to get the door closed in your face or the phone hung up.

Our houses are protected by the good Lord and a gun
And you might meet ’em both if you show up here not welcome son
Our necks are burnt, our roads are dirt and our trucks ain’t clean
The dogs run loose, we smoke, we chew and fry everything
Out here, way out here

– Josh Thompson

I neither smoke nor chew, but other than that I couldn’t have said it better.

P.S. I wouldn’t really shut the door in anyone’s face. We occasionally get Jehovah’s Witnesses out here and I’m very polite to them.

I hadn’t read your blog in quite awhile and was jumping with joy when I read this entry…the song is a persoanl favorite of all my friends and I…and the specific lyrics you chose are what we always end up singing on those long Indiana nights, so I texted everyone and told them to check it out. All the reactions resembled either “dude, ur uncle is a badass”, or “hes the man.” not that you care to be complimented by 20 year-old hooligans, but I was proud my uncle booby thought the same as us on that subject.

    Hahaha! Thanks for commenting!

    Yep, that’s us!

I almost didn’t post this one because your mom had been over at our house that same night and I didn’t want her to think this was a not so subtle slam on her. Which it wasn’t, of course. As I’m sure Josh Thompson would say, “family are always welcome out here, way out here.”
