We started picking corn today. September 18th, hard to imagine. We ran about 25 acres and then were running into wet corn, and it started raining, so we stopped.
Things went pretty smoothly for a first day. I climbed the big bin once, the holding tank once, the little bin 3 times, and the dryer bin 3 times. When we put the batch dryer back together after servicing this fall I put the mercury switch that indicates the dryer is full or empty when unloading in upside down. So I spent about an hour scratching my head wondering why the dryer wouldn’t unload.
Sheared a bolt in one of the augers, and that was about it.
We got to use the new grain buggy and it looks like that is really going to be handy when running corn. Except it will let us harvest corn faster, which means the dryers are going to be the next bottleneck.
We’re out of corn that is dry enough to harvest (at least in September), and it’s supposed to rain tomorrow anyway. But we’re up and running.
