Wild Turkey

The flock of wild turkeys was grazing in the corn field across the road from the home farm today.

They’re skittish, and as soon as I opened the truck door to take a picture they took off. There’s at least 30 of them in this flock.

Early this spring I was planting the corn in that field and came across a hen turkey sitting on a nest in the middle of the field. She took off when I got close and I stopped and counted the eggs, 13 of them.

I carefully went around the nest with corn planter and later in the year I saw the hen turkey with a group of poults. I couldn’t count them as they darted around, but it looked like most of the 13 had hatched.

I’m pretty obsessive about planting corn, but I don’t mind having a wobble in the corn rows around a turkey nest to get to watch these birds.

Marilyn, Allan’s sister, has wild turkeys in her yard in Oregon, one gobbled at us when we arrived; we were interrupting his walkabout. It was huge.
