Barn Again

We finally finished up our rebuild of the north side of the barn.

Finished
Finished

Back in September it looked like this.

And back in 1907 it looked like this.

1907

It was cold out there today finishing it up.  Tom and I would put our gloves on between putting on pieces of trim and take them off only when we had to.  The ladders were skittering on the ice, and the air was blue as the screws danced away from our numb fingers.

But looking at these old pictures, it was worth it.  The old barn may fall victim to wind or fire, but we’ve done our part to keep it there for another 100 years.

Imagine how hot that woman in the long dress must have been on a harvest day. Harvest days were always hot, and the women cooked huge meals for all the men working.
No fans, no AC, and if lucky a kerosene stove in addition to the wood range.
But she could always feed her soul and take pride in looking at the beautiful barn.
