A Big Stone Cooking Area Update

The Big Stone Cooking Area is moving forward.

Here’s the footer, ready to bear the weight of the blocks and stone for all eternity.

The Footer

We had an inch of rain after Jay poured it, and there was nary a puddle on it. Jay got it both level and flat.

Here’s the chimney/smoker setting in place.

The Smoker

It is astonishingly heavy. I’d guess it at 500-700 pounds the way the tractor handled.

Here’s Jay cutting the flue pipe holes in the smoker.

Cutting Pipe

Notice the two chains on the pipe. Safety First, that’s our motto. That’s why I told Jay to keep his feet, or any other body part he didn’t care to lose, out from under it.

This shows the flue pipe that will connect the fire pit to the smoker. So the smoke from the fire pit will traverse the flue and then through the cement pipe smoker, providing cool smoke to whatever is in it.

Flue and Chimney

With the chimney in place with the holes cut in it, it is finally time to lay some block and bring some shape to this project!

The good thing is that I got the flared end of the concrete culvert, so I converted it into a very large container pot. It’ll be perfect in my “formal” herb garden. That’s all coming together as Jay works too.

By the way…Jeff and Deena…I watched carefully while the moving and cutting went on so that if anything went wrong there was someone to call an ambulance! It was a little nerve-wracking.

What is the long block thingie from the smoker? Describe where you will put the stuff and so on.
Is the chicken checking out the smoker to make sure she won’t be put in it?
Thanks for the update. I was very curious.

That’ll be a counter for workspace. Underneath, close to the smoker will be a bread oven. Further to the right will be an area to put a propane fired cooking ring with a grate for outside frying.

Jay the mason is working on it part-time around his day job, so we expect to be done in October sometime.

I wondered, Debbie. I would’ve been freaking out, too. 🙂
