The Day of Fruit

Lana and I headed out before 7 am this morning to pick blueberries at Stangland’s blueberry patch.

Yeah, it’s as thick as it looks in this picture. And it was dripping with dew, so we were quickly soaked head to toe.  The berries were a bit sparse with all the cool weather we’ve having lately.  But even so we each picked about 8 pounds in short order.

After picking blueberries I headed up to Jeff and Deena Rosswurm’s to pick apricots.  Jeff said the apricots were good this year and had invited me up to pick.  I plucked an apricot off the tree and it was incredibly delicious.  I went and got Jeff’s ladder so I could pick all the apricots I could.

I sliced up 3 trays of apricots to dry them.

I saved a bunch to eat fresh, and then made the rest into jam.  I also made a batch of blueberry jam [1].

The jam is so pretty, it would be worth doing just to look at it.  That apricot jam looks like summer captured in a jar.

If that’s not enough fruit I went to the Columbia City Farmer’s Market and picked up a pint of plums. They’re incredibly juicy and sweet.

After last year’s late frost and then drought, this year’s fruit is just amazing.

1. I like jam.
