Dead Soybeans

Out in the middle of the soybean field by my house there’s a patch of dead soybeans.

Dead Soybeans

I laid my hoe in there to provide an idea of the size of this spot. So it’s about 6 feet across.

What caused this? A lightning strike! We had a thunderstorm about a week ago and I saw lightning hit the field. This is about 100 yards from my house.

I was out hoeing volunteer corn out of the field when I came across this spot. Working in a field by hand gives you an visceral understanding of just how big an acre is and that a ‘long row to hoe’ is not just an idiom.

A Long Way Home

This is the view from the far side of the field. It was a long way home.

Wow! For the hoeing and for the lightning strike.

Spenser went out and stayed with him the whole time, and Owen must have gotten separated at some point. Owen came back and could hardly stop panting…God only knows where he’d been out there.

Poor baby couldn’t see over them and find anyone. 🙂

We are constantly reminded not to sit under a tree during a thunderstorm, but soybean fields are omitted from the warning. A sad omission.

I told Debbie the next time there’s a thunderstorm if she gets caught outside to run to that spot in the field. Lightning never strikes the same spot twice!
